Junior Sport

Physical activity is essential to every child's physical and social well being. Young people need to have access to regular, well-organised and safely delivered sporting and recreational activities. In the ACT, many activities are available through community sport and recreation clubs, school curriculum and the accessibility to a wide range of facilities and open spaces.

Active Canberra works in partnership with a range of agencies and organisations towards providing quality physical activity opportunities for ACT children and young people. These key stakeholders include; other government agencies, the 3 education sectors, state sporting and recreational organisations, schools, clubs and the community.

Facilitating Connections between Sport and Recreation Providers and Schools

Active Canberra assists providers and schools connect in the following ways;

  • Junior Sport e-News – distributed quarterly to every ACT school setting the e-News provides information to teachers on upcoming participation, professional development, funding opportunities and articles of interest. Sport and recreation providers contribute to the e-News to promote participation opportunities and share the positive outcomes of their recently conducted programs.
  • Participation Days / Events opportunities – conducted each year to assist providers that may not have the capacity to deliver regularly in schools giving them access to targeted students to promote community participation and establish relationships with teachers and schools.
  • Partnerships – with government agencies, such as Health ACT and the Education Training Directorate, and with other community organisations to achieve shared objectives and promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Assistance – provided to sport and recreation providers in the development and delivery of their Junior Development Plans and programs and the coordination of teacher professional development opportunities.
